Indications has emerged that some fraudsters may be latching on the current zeal by Nigerian s to register and obtain Personal Voters Card (PVC) for the purpose of participating in the 2023 election.
Mr. Festus Okoye, a spokesperson for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has warned against fake INEC registration centres for PVC as some persons may be cashing into the moment for fraudulent purpose.
Mr. Okoye who spoke on Monday, dissociated the commission from a website that claims government approval for continuation of the online individual voter’s card registration.
Mr. Okoye said “Members of the public are strongly advised not to succumb to the antics of online scammers and should avoid such fake sites.”
The said website has claimed that the “approved individual voter’s card registration centre” is to reduce crowd at National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) centres.
The claim came less than 24hrs after the official ending of the voter’s card registration, which officially ended on the 31st of July 2021, after extra 2 weeks extension by INEC.
Clariform reports that INEC has conducted a 13 month long voter’s registration exercise. The just ended voter’s registration is probably the longest registration exercise the body has conducted in it’s history.
The exercise was initially to end in May but was extended to Sunday July 31st after which over 12 million voters were registered. The number is majorly young persons who would be voting for the first time next February.
