The United Kingdom (UK) has introduced new travel requirements, set to take effect from November 15, 2023, affecting visitors, including Nigerians.
The major change involves the mandatory application for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for anyone, including children, seeking to enter or transit through the UK.
This means that all visa applicants planning to visit the UK must obtain an ETA card before embarking on their journey.
The UK Home Office clarified that this requirement applies to individuals who were previously eligible to visit the UK without a visa and are not already legal residents in the country.
Those traveling for purposes such as tourism, business, visiting family and friends, or staying for less than six months are also included in this mandate.
To secure an ETA, applicants must complete an online application before making travel arrangements. Once granted, an ETA is valid for multiple journeys over two years or until the expiration of the applicant’s passport.
Furthermore, the UK Home Office emphasized that travellers with valid visas may still be denied boarding if they do not possess a valid ETA, as the ETA is digitally linked to travellers’ passports.
This update signifies a significant change in UK travel regulations and emphasizes the importance of securing an ETA for all eligible travellers before their UK-bound journeys.
