Some officials from the London Academy Business School and the University of Sunderland are presently in the process of seeking approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to offer degree programs in Nigeria.
This development was confirmed by a delegation from the University of Sunderland, headed by Dr. Derek Watson, following a meeting with the Acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Chris Maiyaki, in Abuja. This information was disclosed in a statement released on Thursday.
Dr. Watson, an Associate Professor from the Faculty of Business Law and Tourism, emphasized the productivity of the meeting and the University of Sunderland’s extensive 30 years of experience.
He stated,
- “What we have agreed on today is the critical importance of adhering to compliance procedures. In addition to this, we will engage qualified academics from LABS (London Academy Business School), who are not only certified educators but also active industry consultants. This approach ensures that students in Nigeria receive an educational experience equivalent to that of their counterparts studying in England.”
Dr. Larry Jones-Esan, President/Director of Studies at the London Academy Business School, elaborated on the purpose of their visit to the NUC.
He clarified that their primary objective was to secure recognition from the NUC to offer Sunderland’s programs in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of recognition in addition to NUC accreditation.
He explained that running programs without recognition renders the degrees useless, as students are unable to participate in the NYSC (National Youth Service Corps).
Dr. Jones-Esan further stressed the significance of the partnership between the two institutions, emphasizing the need to address the challenge of limited university admissions in Nigeria, where only a fraction of applicants secure a spot.
This collaborative effort seeks to provide a solution to this pressing issue, aligning with the increasing demand for higher education in the country.
