PARTY POLITICS: Nigeria`s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially debunked rumours of going round about a possible leadership change in the party, especially the removal of its National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu.
What We Know
The rumour has been described as “based on the imagination of its sponsors” according to the APC National Publicity Secretary, Barr. Felix Morka, who says that the party has no plans of removing its National Chairman.
Barr. Felix Morka disclosed this on Wednesday, describing the rumour suggesting that APC is planning to remove Abdullahi Adamu as baseless and untrue.
Morka however, in twist accused the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of responsibility for spreading the rumour, which he referred to as “opposition-sponsored media reports on plots to remove the National Chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.”
Notable Quote
The statement by Barr. Felix Morka reads in part, “The attention of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has been drawn to opposition-sponsored media reports on plots to remove the National Chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.
“The reports are based on the imagination of its sponsors ostensibly unnerved by the remarkable achievements of Sen. Adamu since assuming office as the National Chairman.”
“Our Party and leaders are currently focused on the important task of building a strong and vibrant electoral campaign ahead, and will not be distracted by the boring chirps of idle speculators.”
“The opposition PDP is quite welcome to continue to dissipate its energies on innuendoes and chasing after phantom plots in APC rather than concentrate on mending its broken and acrimonious house.
“The National Working Committee of our Party stands united under Sen. Adamu’s leadership as National Chairman with the singular commitment to winning the next general election”,Morka added.
Catch-up
Senator Abdullahi Adamu was the governor of Nasarawa State in Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. He was single handedly handpicked by President Muhammadu Buhari as the current National Chairman of the APC.
His regime began after being affirmed on the 26th of March 2022, as National Chairman of the party at a convention to elect members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC).
The administration of the former Nasarawa State governor at the helm of the party has witnessed multiple controversial issues leading to build-up of complaints against him.
The most recent of the controversies surrounding his leadership was in the build-up to the last convention of the party, when he tried to impose the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan on the party as its presidential candidate, but failed woefully, when other members of the NWC of the party rebuffed his moved.
Takeaway
Clariform reports that there are no clear cut attempts to oust the APC National Chairman. However, recently indications have emerged that some stakeholders of the party were working to get him out of office.
Our investigation shows that those who seek to remove Senator Adamu from office plan to replace him with a Christian, which they consider as a viable option to placate the APC Christian bloc who still feel aggrieved from the choice of a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.
