WHAT WE KNOW
Nigeria students this Monday caused gridlock to the Murtala Mohammed international airport Lagos, as the aggrieved students blocked the access road to the airport. The students action is a protest against Federal Government refusal to reach agreement with Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and or implement an already negotiated agreement.
The situation caused gridlock along the axis as the vehicular movement in and out of the airport was stalled.
The spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, told a local Television Station that police officers have been deployed to the scene.
The National Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Giwa Temitope, confirmed to the media that policemen are at the protest scene.
While the students protested in Lagos, Justice Peter Hamman of the industrial court, heard argument from James Igwe, counsel to the federal government, as he sought to convince the judge to grant his application restraining ASUU from continuing with the strike.
The judge fixed Wednesday, 21st September for ruling on the interlocutory injunction application in the case brought by the Federal Government against ASUU.
NOTABLE QUOTES
Police spokesman in Lagos State, Benjamin Hundeyin in a phone interview assured the deployment of his men, “Our men are there”, he said.
The National Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Giwa Temitope, confirmed to media that policemen are at the protest scene.
“They are here to protect us. Nobody has been harassed but we are not relenting. No retreat, no surrender,”
CATCH UP
Recall that students last week protested against the FG/ASUU impasse as they blocked the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Ibadan-Ife Road.
TAKEAWAY
It’s embarrassing that the Nigerian Federal Government have shown a complete lack of ideas on how to resolve this ASUU strike.
It’s staggers imagination how the government find it challenging to implement an agreement it reached with the striking lecturers.
The inability to resolve this impasse, has watered down whatever credit the government would want to claim from resolving the NASU/SSANU strike.
