ECO4 scheme Wales: Thousands of households across Wales are upgrading their heating systems at no cost under the UK government’s ECO4 Scheme. Running until March 2026, the programme funds energy efficiency improvements such as insulation, new heating systems, and even solar panels for vulnerable and low-income families.

What Is the ECO4 Scheme?

The ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation Phase 4) requires large energy suppliers to support households with poor Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings (D–G). Eligible upgrades may include:

  • Loft and wall insulation
  • Renewable heating systems like heat pumps
  • Solar panels
  • Smart heating controls

These measures are designed to cut bills and reduce carbon emissions, supporting the UK’s net-zero targets.

Who Qualifies in Wales?

Residents may qualify if they:

  • Live in homes with low EPC ratings
  • Receive eligible benefits such as Universal Credit or Housing Benefit
  • Meet low-income thresholds or live in fuel-poor rural areas

The scheme follows a whole-house approach, which means multiple improvements may be installed to boost energy efficiency by at least two EPC bands.

How the Process Works

Applying is straightforward:

  1. Check Eligibility via local council or accredited ECO providers
  2. Book a Free Home Survey
  3. Get Upgrades Installed — with no upfront costs

For example, Anglesey Council’s ECO4 portal provides direct access for local residents. Independent providers like ECO Wales also offer free eligibility checks.

Benefits for Households

  • Lower bills – Families can save £300–£500 a year on average energy costs
  • Healthier homes – Insulation reduces damp and cold spots
  • Environmental impact – ECO4 helps cut carbon emissions across Wales

Wider Context

ECO4 is part of the UK’s broader strategy to fight fuel poverty, alongside Welsh Government initiatives like the Warm Homes Nest Scheme. Together, these programmes aim to lift thousands of households out of energy hardship while supporting climate goals.

Conclusion

The ECO4 Scheme is transforming lives across Wales, offering free upgrades that make homes warmer, bills cheaper, and communities greener. If you think you may qualify, check with your local authority or an accredited provider to start the process.

At Clariform, we’ll continue reporting on opportunities like ECO4 that directly impact everyday life — from heating upgrades in Wales to global opportunities for immigrants.
