BASIC FACTS

  • Former President Trump says many people wants him to run for the US President in 2024.
  • Trump is currently under investigation for his handling of classified documents.
  • Donald Trump dropped this latest hint as indications continue to suggest that the former president may be taking another run for the White House

WHAT WE KNOW

Former President Donald Trump of the United States, on Thursday told the media that many people in the country wants him to contest for the US president in November 2024.

The immediate past Republican president of the United States spoke in an interview with NDTV. He said he is leading in the polls for next presidential election. Trump also said he will make a decision in the near future to let his supporters know if he will contest the election.

The billionaire former reality TV star, 76, also repeated claims that the 2020 election in which he lost to current President Joe Biden was rigged.

Former President Trump has faced intense legal scrutiny over his efforts to overturn the results of the poll and over an attack on the US Capitol by his supporters on January 6 last year.

Since leaving office in January 2021, Trump has continued to elicit various reactions amongst Americans, some of whom see him as divisive, while others praise him.

Trump is currently under investigation for potential mishandling of classified documents, with the FBI raiding his Florida home last month.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and called the raid “one of the most egregious assaults on democracy in the history of our country”.

NOTABLE QUOTE

President Trump speaking at an interview said, “Everyone wants me to run. I am leading in the polls,”

“In every poll, in Republican polls and in Democrat polls, and I will make a decision in the very near future, I suspect. And I think that a lot of people are going to be very happy,”

“There is tremendous proof, there is tremendous evidence,”

COMMENTARY

Donald Trump was USA President from January 2017 to January 2021, but was unable to return after he lost the 2020 November election to incumbent President Joe Biden of the Democrat Party.

Trump government was characterised by what many referred to as “un presidential” approach to governance and in his relationship with the media.

After loosing the elections, supporters of Donald Trump invaded the capitol building on January 6th, as parliament was confirming the results of the elections.

Recently, Trump has been facing investigation into his handling of classified documents while in government.

In a speech on Saturday in Pennsylvania he hit back at assertions by Biden that he and his supporters are undermining US democracy, calling Biden an “enemy of the state”.

Definitely, the last of Donald Trump and his nationalistic posturing has not been heard. Consider the number of votes Trump scored in November 2020, consider that he is a major factor in the Republican of today, then you will agree the 76 years old billionaire can’t be written off yet.
