The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has taken action to reclaim 165 plots of land in the serviced districts of the Federal Capital City, including properties owned by prominent individuals. This decision, which has been officially announced by the Permanent Secretary of FCT, Olushade Adesola, is a result of the violation of development terms for the Right of Occupancy and the failure of the landowners to develop their allotted plots.
The affected plots belong to both individuals and corporate entities, all of whom have consistently failed to adhere to the agreed-upon terms, as specified in Section 28(5)(a) & (b) of the Land Use Act. The revocation notice, prepared by the Land Department, received approval from Minister Wike due to continuous contravention of the development terms.
In a statement, Adesola explained:
- “The Federal Capital Territory Administration FCTA hereby informs the general public that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory has, in the exercise of the powers conferred on him under Section 28(5)(a) & (b) of the Land Use Act 1978, revoked the underlisted plots with names and titles as reflected in our records for continued contravention of the terms of development of the Right of Occupancy, to wit non-development.”
Notable individuals affected by this action include the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi; former Governor of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Uffot Joseph Ekaette; former Justice of the Supreme Court and chairman of the National Political Reforms Conference (NPRC), Late Justice Niki Tobi.
Other affected individuals include former Justice of the Supreme Court, Udoma Udo Udoma; two-time Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Kanu Agabi; Chairman of BUA Group, Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu; former Chairman of Leadership Newspapers, Sam Nda-Isaiah; and columnist Donu Kogbara, among others.
The affected plots are located within various districts in the FCC, such as Central Business District, Maitama, Wuse II, Gudu, Wuye, Jabi, Utako, Katampe Extension, Idu Industrial Area, and Asokoro Districts.
This action follows Minister Wike’s previous commitment to revoke undeveloped plots and those with overdue ground rents. Defaulting allottees were given a two-week grace period to fulfill their obligations or face the revocation of their allocations.
