CUPP, The Coalition of United Political Parties has advised the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to reconsider it’s position on it’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, Clariform has learnt.
WHAT WE KNOW
A political interest group, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), on Friday urged the crisis ridden opposition PDP to take a second look at it’s position on it’s National Chairman Sen. Iyorchia Ayu.
Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, spokesperson of the coalition, in a statement, Friday, asked the PDP’s National Executive Council (NEC), members to as a matter of urgency sack it’s National Chairman, the embattled Sen. Iyorchia Ayu and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu before the 2023 General elections.
The CUPP spokesman accused the two executives of involvement in activities that is dividing the party.
Ugochinyere, accused the PDP Chairman and secretary of falsifying and swapping of the winners of the party primaries.
He particularly accused the two substituting the name of the winner of Ideato South House of Assembly primaries with another aspirant who came last in the primaries in Imo State.
Ugochinyere, the CUPP spokesman also accused Samuel Anyanwu and PDP Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu of working for Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma of the APC, to weaken PDP candidates in the state for the forth coming elections, particularly for Ideato Nort and South federal constituencies.
NOTABLE QUOTES
In a statement by CUPP spokesman Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere this Friday, he stated:
“keeping these two men in office reminds us of the dark days of Ali Modu Sheriff as National Chairman of the PDP. “
”I call on the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to press it on chieftains of the party and Ayu on the need to save the party from further polarisation and loss of our base in the South.
“This can be achieved by ensuring that PDP National Chairman, Senator Ayu quits the party now alongside the National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu.
“Anyanwu is working hard for the Imo State Governor, Uzodinma, on a mission to destroy Imo PDP.
“Alhaji Atiku Abubakar must be careful of sharing information with Ayu and Anyanwu as both still maintain strong ties and contacts with the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, including his wife, Oluremi, that Anyanwu worked closely with in the Senate and still working with the hope that an Asiwaju Presidency can help him with his anti-PDP guber ambition.”
BACKGROUND
The Coalition of United Political Parties, as the name indicates, is a body comprising of all or most political parties in Nigeria; at least a coalition who wish to join.
Put differently, it’s a collection of various parties. However, from all indications, the membership activities of the group does not seem to include the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).
COMMENTARY
The question that readily comes to mind is – if Ikenga Ugochinyere as a member of the PDP and a House of Rep candidate in the 2023 elections is speaking for himself or for the party in Imo State or at any level at all.
That notwithstanding, there is no doubt that the CUPP spokesperson is speaking to a very major issue that is bedeviling the Peoples Democratic Party at the moment.
However, the fact that members of CUPP are drawn from various parties which includes the PDP, but as the spokesman for CUPP, should he be more speaking about what is happening in PDP as a spokesman for CUPP?
It could be argued that even though he is a member of the PDP, he would have spoken in that capacity at a PDP forum and not as CUPP spokesman.
