Further down this article, we shall look at how you can relocate to the UK under the four year rule without first obtaining the QTS, that is, based on your current qualification as a teacher in your home country.

But first, let’s look at the guidance on how to apply for and acquire the QTS if you wish to have it first before relocating to the UK. This is very possible if you are already qualified to teach or have gained teaching experience in your home country.

Remember to share this content to your friends and contacts, and across your social network platforms to reach those who may benefit from this information and the opportunity it has opened up for these foreign trained teachers.

QTS Application Assessment

Qualified teacher status (QTS) is a legal requirement to teach in many English schools, and most schools prefer their teachers to have it. It is not exactly mandatory in all schools before you can get a teaching job in the UK, but the job market treats those that have it with obvious preference. For this reason, even though not mandatory, it is of great practical relevance.

Consequently the UK’s department of education has made a provision for an online platform to foreign trained teachers to begin their accendance towards acquiring the QTS. This online service is for qualified teachers who are trained to teach outside of the UK who want to apply for qualified teacher status (QTS) to teach in English schools.

Basically, you can use the platform for the following purpose:

  1. To confirm if you are currently qualified to receive UK’s Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), and if you should apply for it right away. It checks and confirms whether you are eligible to apply for QTS.
  2. Secondly, it helps you understand the types of evidence you’ll need to provide when applying for the QTS

The process takes about 5 minutes according to the information available on the department of education website. They will ask you some questions to check your eligibility to apply for QTS in England. It is a form of official assessment pre-formal application for the QTS.

It is important to note that there’s no charge to apply for QTS. Also, you do not need to be in the UK to use the QTS assessment platform. It is online and all you will need is access to the internet. You will need to register to start your application. You can also save and return to it at a later date.

If you apply for QTS through this online platform, they will assess the teacher training and experience you gained from your home country to decide whether you’re qualified to teach in English schools. When you first arrive at the home page, you will be required to confirm whether:

  • You are applying, or
  • Want to check if you can apply

That is the assessment process.

Having QTS does not guarantee you a job or give you the right to work in England. You’ll still need to apply for a teaching job separately and have the correct visa or status.

That is why I will recommend you also read the briefing on how to get a UK teaching job from overseas and relocate with your family to live and work in the UK as a teacher.
