INSECURITY: In the wake of the worsening insecurity in Nigeria and the apparent helplessness of the federal government, states are beginning to take personal and regional initiatives to protect their citizens, and the Zamfara State governor is walking this path.

What We Know

The Zamfara State administration has announced the establishment of an emergency call center for the general public as part of its continuous attempts to solve the growing insecurity challenge afflicting the State.

This was made known in a press release issued to journalists in Gusau, the state’s capital, by the information commissioner, Hon. Ibrahim Magaji Dosara on Friday.

The emergency call center, 112, can be contacted free of charge and from any location by any citizen in the event of an attack, kidnapping, livestock rustling, bandit activity, or other criminal activity.

Notable Quote

Hon. Ibrahim Magaji Dosara said:

“The call to the center will immediately be verified, processed, and directed to the appropriate security operatives for necessary rescue operations across the 14 local government areas of the State.”

“People are, therefore, advised to make use of the opportunity to call the emergency call center to inform the government of the emergency or challenges facing them to enable the government to swing into a rescue mission.”

The commissioner stated that the government decided to construct the emergency call center to make it easier for citizens to contact authorities or security personnel if bandits or other criminals break security in any part of the State.

He added:

“It may be recalled that citizens are apprehensive of exposing bandits and informants due to the fear of being killed.”

“However, with the new emergency call center, people can now call to tell their ordeal without the fear of being exposed to bandits when they share intelligence.”

“With this development, Zamfara became the first State in Nigeria to establish such emergency call center for security.”
