A closer check on some recent developments in Nigeria, especially the current political revolution associate with the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Obi, would interest anyone who has been long a close watcher of political developments in the country since 1999.
The “Peter Obi Movement” as popularly captured by those fond of him, and also by a section of the media is fast redefining the political landscapes in the country.
His popularity is next to none in the history of politics in Nigeria, and so many things account for this, even though much of these factors could roll into just one – CREDIBILITY.
A lot can be said about the issue of credibility, but that will be taking us away from the focus of this editorial.
The trajectory of Mr Obi and his impact on people and his environment suggests that there could be some higher forces propelling the former two term governor of Anambra State, who now wants to become Nigeria`s next president after the current President Muhammadu Buhari.
The contest of higher forces becomes a lot clearer when you consider the fact that virtually all factors that swears the Nigerian political pendulum counts against him, at least from human perspective.
Peter Obi left a major opposition party the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to join a relative little known political party, the LP. When he first made this move, only a few persons gave him a chance.
Many others immediately wrote him off, concluding hastily that Peter Obi`s presidential ambition was a stillborn. Some said it was dead on arrival as a candidate of the Labour Party, which from their calculation had no “structures” to deliver any candidate, late alone a presidential candidate.
However, barely a month down the line, Mr. Obi has become the most talked about candidate nationwide. The fear of the Labour Party flagbearer is now the beginning of wisdom, or perhaps the focal point of every discussion in political “situation rooms” of other parties.
Further, Peter Obi is from the South East, the region of the country that could not even manage to get the slot of a running mate in any of the two biggest political parties fielding presidential candidates for the 2023 election. That is the APC and PDP.
Additionally, Mr. Obi does not have the kind of resources the candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the APC has. These two forces have individually mustered the largest war chest for any political duel anyone can think of in the country today.
Yet, when Peter Obi sneezes, the PDP and APC and their candidates catches cold. Some say, “It can only be the work of divine anointing” on the former two term governor.
