More than 7 years after the controversial June 2016 vote to leave the European Union (EU), more Brits now think it was a bad idea for the United Kingdom to vote in favour of the Boris Johnson led Brexit.
Clear majority of Brits will now vote to remain the EU if the referendum were to be reconducted today.
This is the outcome of a recent opinion poll conducted by YouGov pollsters, which shows that at least 55% of Brits have now concluded that the decision to leave the European Union was a bad one for the country.
While this is not the first time same YouGov poll have made this revelation, this is undoubtedly the largest margin between those who are still in support of Brexit and those who now think otherwise.
This new poll result released on Tuesday shows that only about 31% of participants still think that Brexit was a step in the right direction.
The 55% who now regret the Brexit idea, especially after seeing what the promise of a “Global Britain” has become may however never have another opportunity to reverse the trend.
Breaking the survey further, the YouGov pollsters explains that out of more than 2,000 Brits who participated in the survey, about 63% have now concluded that Brexit is a total failure for the UK.
On the other hand, only about 12% considers it a success. While 18% thereof, are completely indifferent about Brexit.
The 2016 referendum is most likely a once in a generation opportunity. Asking for yet another referendum to rejoin the EU, may also create the likelihood of another Scottish independence referendum. This is certainly not a risk any British leader would like to gamble with.
Successive conservative governments, some of which were never Brexiters have struggled to justify the outcome of the UK’s departure from the EU. They have gloated over little progress the UK have made in the economic front since Brexit. However, economists have not completely agreed with this gloating.
No matter, how the argument goes, and what side anyone is, one thing is very certain, and that is the fact that the UK economy have suffered since Brexit. While many may argue differently as to the cause of this economic downturns, critics of Brexit would strongly argue that it worsened labour shortages in the UK. This shortage has continued to grow in lips and bounds.
This is majorly because EU citizens who preferred working in the UK can no longer travel across the border without visas to work as they used to.
