There are no fewer than 119 princes from Oyo town who have expressed interest in taking the throne of Alaafin of Oyo.
With the death of the 45th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Atanda Olayiwola Adeyemi 111, the throne has been left vacant.
Oba Adeyemi, who assumed the throne in 1971, passed away at the age of 83 and joined his forefathers.
According to Chief Mukaila Afonja, the Baba Iyaji (Head of Princes) of Oyo, 119 candidates have expressed interest in becoming the new Alaafin of Oyo.
He claimed that several factors, including educational background, wealth, influence, familiarity with Yoruba culture, and the capacity to speak Yoruba without any muddles, would be taken into account when selecting the next Alaafin.
According to him, the 46th Alaafin of Oyo would be chosen by the Oyomesi (King makers) after screening the applicants.
