Nigeria`s 25 year old Tobi Amusan, has set a new world record in women’s 100 meters race at the World Athletic Championship in the United States on Monday.
The Nigerian sprinter, has won the gold medal in the ongoing competition by dipping to set a grand breaking record in the global competition.
Amusan by this fit have not only set a world record, but has also become the first Nigerian to win a gold medal at the World Athletic Championship, currently taking place in Eugene, Oregon, in the United States.
Also the Nigerian sprinter has by this new record flipped the previous world record set by Keni Harrison of the United States of America.
The US sprinter in 2016, set a world record of 12.20, but Amusan first retired this record in the semi-final of this year`s competition,. She also went further to give a stronger showing with a wind-aided 12.06 second in the final.
Following the Nigerian Amusan`s first position is Jamaican Britany Anderson who came second with the silver medal, while the Puerto Rican Olympic gold medalist Jasmine Camacho-Quinn took the bronze.
Reacting to her victory, Amusan said, “Honestly, I believe in my abilities but I was not expecting a world record at these championships.
“The goal is always just to execute well and get the win. So the world record is a bonus. I knew I had it in me but I could not believe it when I saw it on the screen after the semis.
“Before the final, I just tried to stay calm and to do my best. I took a deep breath knowing that I have some goal to accomplish and it worked pretty good. I knew it was very fast but not this fast” she said.
