Olakunle Oluomo, the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly has been granted bail after being detained on Thursday by agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Around 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, the anti-graft agency detained Mr. Oluomo at Lagos’ Murtala Mohammed International Airport.
According to a source at the Ogun Assembly, the operatives took up Mr. Oluomo to respond to inquiries on alleged financial mismanagement.
Recall that Clariform had stated that the Speaker is currently involved in a financial issue that the anti-graft agency is looking into.
The assembly filed charges against the anti-graft agency and the former Deputy Speaker, Oludare Kadiri, following multiple invites from the agency.
The agency and Mr. Kadiri were both charged by the Assembly with conspiring to persecute the lawmakers.
According to a source in the EFCC, the Speaker was freed late Friday night on the condition that he report back to work on Monday with the assembly clerk and the accountant.
Yusuf Adejojo, the chairman of the House Committee on Information in the Assembly, stated on Thursday that MPs had postponed their meetings “for one reason or another.”
According to Mr. Adejojo (APC, Abeokuta South I), the decision to adjourn the meeting had already been reached before the Speaker was taken into custody on Thursday morning.
There was a rumor that the members had adjourned because the Speaker had the Assembly mace, a symbol of authority.
On Saturday, no one answered calls placed to the Speaker’s phone number. Thursday and Friday saw a shut-off of the lines.
The Speaker got home early Saturday morning, according to Abdulgafar Adeleye, the Speaker’s media assistant, who confirmed his release.
Mr Adeleye said:
“I am there as we speak. Unplanned praise and worship was held earlier today by his supporters and the leadership of CAN in Ifo local government”
