  • The PSC workers union is accusing the PSC management of breaching the terms of service.

WHAT WE KNOW

The Police Service Commission (PSC) workers union on Thursday issued a notice of indefinite strike to the management of the commission over breach of conditions of service.

In a leaked letter, the workers, addressed to Musiliu Smith, PSC chairman, the workers said the indefinite strike will take effect from Monday, August 29th.

The letter seen by a Clariform reporter was signed by Adoyi Adoyi, Chairman of joint union congress, PSC chapter, Abayomi Anthony, chairman of Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), Yusuf Nasidi, secretary of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) and Remi Ogundeji, secretary of NCSU.

The strike notice is coming as a reaction to the disagreement between Usman Baba Alkali, Inspector General of Police, and the PSC over recruitment of constables into the Nigeria Police Force. The PSC handles issues of recruitment and promotion of the Nigerian police.

NOTABLE QUOTES

The letter addressed to Musliu Smith reads, “You may wish to recall that the Joint Union Congress of the Police Service Commission had embarked on a 3-day warning strike on Monday 24 January, 2022, which was suspended in national interest in order to embrace dialogue and reconciliation.”

“As a responsible union, we make bold to state that all the conditions necessary for continuous working harmony have been breached by the management, hence our resort to continue with our agitation until our earlier agreements are fully implemented.”

“Following from the above therefore, the union and the entire staff do hereby serve a notice of indefinite strike to the Management, beginning on Monday, 29 August 2022.”

CATCH-UP

Recall that the media reported a rift between the Nigerian police force (NPF) over recruitment of constables into the police. The NPF had dismissed an advertisement by PSC calling for applicants to apply as constables in the force. The disagreement led the PSC to suspend the 2022 recruitment of constables into the force, just a few days back.

TAKEAWAY

The issue of employers, especially government not to keep to terms of service. Breaching agreement is now common place. This apart from the industrial disharmony it creates distrust of government by the citizens.
