HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

President Buhari has made several trips to the United Kingdom for medical reasons since assuming the president of Nigeria. The nature of his ailment has never been disclosed to Nigerians. However, President Buhari has himself confessed during one of the trips that he had “never been so ill” and that he had received several blood transfusions.

His frequent trips abroad for medical treatment have brought criticism about the government’s transparency over his illness and worries about leadership during some of his longer absences while still in office.

In 2017, Buhari spent well over 100 days in the United Kingdom receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness at the expense of the Nigerian tax payers. Before this time, he also had earlier spent seven weeks in London for medical treatment , during which he had never been so sick in his life. He also spoke of receiving blood transfusions.

BASIC FACTS

  • President Buhari`s nature of illness and medical treatment has not been disclosed to Nigerians.
  • The cost of his medical treatments has also not been disclosed to Nigerians or captured in any public record.
  • The reason for the cancelation of today`s planned medical trip was not disclosed to the public.
  • Palydom investigation have gathered that members of the Nigerian diaspora in the UK were planning protests in London against the president’s visit. A human rights lawyer, Barr. Williams Ukonu, has confirmed this to Clariform from the UK, where he also says that plans were being made to protest at the Nigerian House in London while the President is in the UK.
  • Some lawyers have argued that it is constitutionally required for the president to formerly transmit power to his deputy before such a medical trip to the United London. While, Buhari complied with this constitutional requirement when he travelled for several months between 2016 and 2018 for same medical treatment, he has failed to transmitted power to Vice President Osinbajo in the last two years. No reason has been adduced for this.

NOTABLE QUOTE

“The PDP is disturbed that while Mr. President jets out for medical treatment in well-equipped hospitals abroad, our hospitals and medical personnel are in very sorry situation while millions of our compatriots suffer,” says the opposition PDP.
