PARTY POLITICS: A nephew of President Muhammadu Buhari – Fatuhu Muhammed, a member of the House of Representatives, representing the president`s Daura constituency at the House of Representative has resigned his membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Basic Facts

  • Fatuhu Muhammed, a nephew of President Muhammadu Buhari has dumped the APC, just as Senator Ahmed Babba Kaita of same Kastina had previously done.
  • Both men hails from Kastina State as President Muhammadu Buhari and had been ardent supporters of the president and the APC.
  • Fatuhu Muhammed was unable to win the APC ticket for a chance to recontest to retain his legislative seat in the 2023 election.

What we know

Fatuhu Muhammed is closely related to President Buhari in bloodline. He is the son of the president`s late elder brother.

He represents Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua federal constituency of Katsina state, in Nigeria`s lower legislative chamber – the House of Representative.

The Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua federal constituency is President Muhammadu Buhari`s federal constituency of the House of Representative, as the president hails from Daura.

The implication of this is that the president and the All Progressives Congress (APC) has currently lost the federal constituency of the president to an opposition party.

Fatuhu Muhammed tendered his resignation of the membership of the APC in a letter dated July 13 and addressed to the ward Chairman of Sarkin Yara A ward in Daura.

The said letter was also copied to the Chairman of the APC in Katsina State, and by Muhammed`s own declaration, his resignation from the ruling APC takes immediate effect.

Notable Quote

The said letter reads in part:

“This is to notify you that I have resigned my membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with immediate effect commencing from Wednesday the 13th day of July, 2022,” he wrote.

“Attached herewith is my Party Membership Registration slip with slip No.KT/DRA/10/00002, while I thank you and the Party for the opportunity given to me to serve the interest of the people of Daura/Sandamu/Mai’Adua federal constituency while working with the party, accept my best wishes please.”

Takeaway

Clariform recalls that this latest development comes months after the senator representing the Katsina North senatorial constituency, also dumped the ruling APC.

Senator Ahmed Babba Kaita, who dumped the ruling party immediately switched to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

The Katsina North, comprises Daura where President Muhammadu Buhari hails from.

The implication of these two developments is that the president`s party – the APC has lost both members representing the federal constituencies in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Catch-up

Clariform reports that the ruling All Progressive Congress has experienced loss of membership following the conclusion of the party`s convention where most of the seating legislators under the ticket of APC lost the party`s ticket for re-election.

The APC`s loss of favour is also following the deplorable security situation around the country, which has made the future of the party and the possibility of its reelection in 2023 very bleak.

Senator Ahmed Babba Kaita, member representing the Kastina North was the first high profile APC member to dump the party following the party convention.

Notable Quote

While addressing Senator Kaita’s dumping of the ruling party, Abdulkadir Lawal, the senator`s aide, had said in a statement in April “Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita is not a bandwagon politician.”

“His exemplary and robust representation in the Nigerian Senate is to the admiration of all, and with significant, visible impacts in the areas of infrastructural and human capital development across the three Senatorial zones of the state. There is room to do more.

“The fresh page from the decision to join the PDP represents the ideals of representativeness in the mandate, goodwill and an even more determined desire and opportunity to provide succour, comfort and the much-needed dividends of democracy to the people.”
