Indications are beginning to emerge that the IPOB leader Mazi Namdi Kanu may soon have the opportunity to address his members in relation to the rising insecurity in the South Eastern region of Nigeria.

This is following a recent meeting between Governor Soludo of Anambra State and the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Friday, when he visited him at the DSS facility where Kanu is currently been detained.

In a meeting with the new governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is said to have decried the wanton and senseless killings ongoing in his home nation, the South Eastern part of Nigeria.

The governor disclosed that Mazi Kanu is willing and ready to address his people in a broadcast. This could be a way to help douse tensions in the region following high spate of violence, kidnapping and killings by several armed groups, which have all been blamed on the IPOB separatists.

Governor Soludo have said the following in a social media post:

“I visited Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, yesterday, (Friday, 13th May, 2022) to felicitate with him and also as part of the wider consultations with critical stakeholders in search of lasting peace and security in the South East.

“He assured that if the opportunity arises, he will be glad to personally broadcast to his followers to maintain the peace.

Together, we shall restore peace, security and prosperity in Anambra and the Southeast.”

  • There has been multiplicity of armed groups, which have led to increase of violence and criminal activities in the South East region.
  • There has been accusations and counter accusations between the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Nigerian government on who is responsible for this bloodlettings and criminal developments.
  • The new governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo visited the IPOB leader in DSS detention as a follow up to his for negotiation with all stakeholders with a view to achieving lasting peace and security in the South East region.

BACKGROUND FACTS

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is a separatist movement founded by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in 2012 with a major objective of restoring an independent Biafran nation.

Biafra`s short stint with sovereignty and an independent country was between 1967 and 1970, when it was defeated in a very bloody battle by the Nigerian federal government.

IPOB has been outlawed in Nigeria as a terrorist organization, but this declaration of the freedom movement as a terrorist organization has since been rejected by the international community.

Following a contentious abduction of the IPOB leader in Kenya, by agents of the Nigerian government, Kanu is currently in detention in a DSS (Nigerian secret police) facility in Abuja.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is now facing trial for treason in Nigeria. He is also scheduled for two court appearances on the 18th and 26th of May, 2022, for the continuation of his ongoing trial.
