UK TORY PARTY: The British former Minister for Equalities, Kemi Badenoch with Nigerian root has crashed out of the race for the next British Prime Minister after the incumbent Boris Johnson, who already resigned his leadership of the Tory party.
This means that Nigeria`s Kemi Badenoch has lost her bid to succeed Boris Johnson as British Prime Minister, and bringing to an end UK`s “earliest opportunity for first black Prime Minister”.
Her loss came after YouGov poll found her as the favourite to defeat all other contenders if she makes it to the final election where all Tory members will chose from the last two finalists.
Kemi was eliminated from the Tory leadership race, at the fourth round of voting, leaving Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt and Liz Truss to continue in the race for the last two.
The former Equality Minister was only able to garner 58 votes from her colleagues, which was the least in the fourth round of voting.
This automatically brings to an end the ambition of Kemi Badenoch who was little known before her emergence as a candidate for the office of the UK Prime Minister.
The former Chancellor of Exchequer (Nigeria`s version of Finance Minister), Mr Rishi Sunak once again toped the other contenders with 118 votes from the British MPs, according to the result announced by the chairman of the Conservatives’ 1922.
In the second position was Ms Mordaunt with 92 votes, while the incumbent British Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss came third with 86 votes.
Notwithstanding this loss, Kemi Badenoch have made her mark in British politics and may have also ensured for herself a laudable position in the Tory party and in the next British government to be led by the Tories.
Notable Quotes:
In a statement shortly after the results, Ms Mordaunt praised Kemi for “her fresh thinking and bold policies”.
“I want to pay tribute to my friend Kemi Badenoch who electrified the leadership contest with her fresh thinking and bold policies,” said Ms Mordaunt.
Speaking further, she said, “She and I both know that the old way of government isn’t working as it should. Voters want change and we owe it to them to offer a bold new vision for this country. Kemi’s passion for this showed and I’m glad she put herself forward to be heard.”
