Local news report indicates that the United States is close to agreeing on an arrangement to relocate asylum seekers in the country to Spain, a European member state, which is akin to a similar step taking by the United Kingdom early in April this year.
Affected asylum seekers will be the Latin Americans whose numbers have massively increased around their borders with the Unites States since the Joe Biden presidency.
Particularly, this group of migrants are those massing at the US Southern border. The extend of the discussion between the US and Spain is currently not clear, and what has been agreed or yet to be discussed are also not clear yet.
However, the report indicates that efforts are on top gear to reach an agreement that will be announce during the Summit of the Americans taking place in the United States in the coming week.
The host country of these asylum seekers – Spain currently have the highest unemployment rate in the European Union. However, the country also currently has labour shortage problem.
Clariform also reports that Spain shares language similarity with the Latin American countries, and has been a major destination of choice for the Latino holiday makers.
Official data shows that as at 2021, about 1.5 million people from the Latin American countries live and work in Spain.
On Thursday 14th April, 2022, the UK Home Secretary announced a new deal struck between the UK and Rwanda which provides a new arrangement for the processing of asylum seekers who arrive in the UK through what she described as illegal channel.
