To some watchers of event with discerning minds, the emergence of Ahmed Lawan as the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) was long concluded within the Buhari camp.
However, what those who rightly predicted this development could not have imagined is how the Senate President eventually emerged. Becoming a consensus candidate of the APC is certainly something that came out of the blues.
There are also those who still hoped that the public position of the 11 Northern governors who openly declared their support for a Northern candidate was an indication that the South still had a chance to get one of their own to the grab the APC ticket.
However, the outburst from the acclaimed APC leader, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abeokuta, Ogun State could not have been a clearer signal that there was something seriously happening behind closed doors in the APC.
Now that the did is done and President Buhari has finally shown his card and unequivocally shown his real and true colour, what shall the South do?
What shall the Tinubu`s do? Those PDP governors who decamped to APC on the pretention of going to ensure the South gets power in 2023, where does this leave them?
By this decision and action – choosing his Senate President Ahmed Lawan, as his successor, President Buhari has drawn the battle line, but who dares to fight?
Some northern governors who earlier openly declared their support for a Southern flag bearer have reportedly disowned this decision by Buhari, which was announced by his own chosen APC chairman.
Going by the antecedents of these northern politicians, who can truly trust this governor`s apparent opposition to a northerner successor chosen by Buhari to replace him.
Many would see this as crocodile tears for Tinubu who some of them may have sympatry for, considering his unquestionable past loyalty to the north, against the wishes of the Southwest and the entire south generally, in previous elections.
